TROY, Mich. (August 7, 2017) – The American Collegiate Hockey Association, the governing body for non-varsity college hockey in the United States, has selected Maurice “Mo” Stroemel, Jr. to serve as the ACHA Director of Hockey Operations.
In his position as ACHA Director of Hockey Operations, Stroemel will be responsible for the administrative and operational hockey functions of the ACHA. Stroemel will work with the ACHA Executive Board and the respective ACHA Division Commissioners to ensure the policies of the ACHA and USA Hockey are observed. Issues such as eligibility, compliance, discipline, and site selection for Regional Tournaments will fall under Stroemel’s purview. Stroemel will also assist with the Select Team process and execution.
“We are very excited to have Mo joining our ACHA staff,” ACHA Executive Board President Paul Hebert said. “Mo has an outstanding work ethic, a familiarity with our organization and fits in very well with our existing staff. He will be great in his new position.”
Stroemel is no stranger to the ACHA, having served multiple roles with Penn State’s hockey programs since 1994, including Director of Hockey Operations for the inaugural season of PSU’s NCAA Women’s varsity program.
In the last three years, Stroemel has been Head Coach of the Penn State Ice Lions, PSU’s ACHA Division 2 Men’s team. The team won three regular season MACH championships, made three regional appearances and one National Tournament appearance. Stroemel stepped down as Head Coach in April 2017 with 250 ACHA wins through two ACHA divisions to his credit.
Stroemel graduated from Penn State in 1980 with a B.A. in advertising and earned his M.F.A. Theatre degree from Penn State in 2002. An avid music buff and guitarist, Mo has performed in State College, Nashville, Philadelphia, London, Toronto and Naples, Florida. He resides in State College with his wife, Joan, and has two adult children, Sarah and Tom.
