ACHA D1 Nationals Bracket Contest - 2019

#1

Ok, if nobody else is going to get this started, I will.
(I wonder how many people are still around to submit picks…)

And just to make it more interesting, I’m changing the scoring. :upside_down_face:
[follow the scoring over on Google Sheets]

Instead of fixing the number of points for each game, I’m letting the market decide: The more people who choose a certain team to win, the lower your reward for picking that team. For example, in the play-in round, you effectively get 1 point to invest in each game. If you pick incorrectly, you lose that point. If you pick correctly, you get your original point back, and the points lost by people who picked the other team get divided equally among those who picked correctly.

It sounds more complicated than it is… think of it like throwing bets in a pot and dividing the pot among the winners.

Anyway, here’s how many points you’re “betting” on a result in each round:

  • 1 point for play-in round
  • 2 points for round 1
  • 3 points for round 2
  • 5 points for semifinals
  • 8 points for the championship

As the bracket is currently up, post your winner for each games as follows:

Game 17: Lindenwood
Game 18: Adrian

Champion: Adrian

I’d like to see Arizona go further, but I just don’t think many people can get past Lindenwood. Or Adrian for that matter. It really comes down to those two teams, they’re just too damn good. And I think UNLV is actually severely underrated, because they’re an independent team. But they’re pretty good. And I hate to put UCO up that high, but they’re pretty darn good too.

I think this tournament is a lot more wide-open than it has been in years. Lindenwood has held #1 all season, but they’ve also looked beatable. Adrian looks beatable. Ohio definitely looks beatable. Iowa State has been impressive as a sleeper… but also beatable.

I would not at all be surprised by a 5-10 seed riding a hot streak to the cup this year. And I do feel pretty insecure, having picked a 1-4 final four… I may have to go back and change some picks before the deadline. We’ll see.

#8

Agreed on the wide open tournament theory. To take a note from the other thread, the last team not to make it (#18 Syracuse) defeated #12 Stony Brook and #8 Liberty over the weekend. Pretty dramatic victories if you check out their social media feeds.

I was conservative as well in going 1-4 in the final four. Lindenwood is just too strong and I feel Ohio will put together one last ride for Coach Hogan. I like Iowa State’s defense and goaltending, but I don’t think they score enough to go deep. It should be a good tournament, hopefully the officiating is consistent and let the best team win.

I added picks to the scoring spreadsheet (link in 1st post) sent to me on Twitter by a “chinesebandit”, and I took the liberty of adding the picks made on the WCHL podcast by co-host Andrew (mostly because he picked my team of choice to win).
